Why does my slip pattern have a zipper?

Most of the vintage slip patterns on this page call for a side zipper. Unlike modern ready-to- wear slips, you'll find that vintage slips tend to be more closely fitted at the waist and more commonly made from lawn, taffeta, satin, batiste or silk crepe.

Today's choice of stretchy synthetic fabric may make the side zipper unnecessary. If you're using a fabric with a fair amount of give (or a pattern cut on the bias) you may be able to omit the side zipper. Baste the side seam and try it on if you're not sure.
